The Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers Act (The Pump Act). is a federal law that went into effect at the end of April 2023. Lactating parents (in most industries) now have the right to a designated private space and time to pump during the workday.

Provide Reasonable Break Time: Allow nursing mothers to take reasonable break time as needed to express breast milk during the workday.
Create a Private Space: Employers are required to provide a private and clean space (other than a bathroom), where nursing mothers can comfortably express breast milk. This space should be shielded from view and free from intrusion to ensure privacy.
Ensure Non-Discrimination: Employers must prohibit discrimination or retaliation against nursing mothers who request or use break time and accommodations for expressing breast milk.
Communicate Policies: Employers must inform employees about their rights and the company’s policies regarding lactation accommodations. This includes providing written notice of these rights to new employees and when employees return from maternity leave.
