How Simple Language Choices Can Make a Big Impact
Language is a powerful tool that can shape our perceptions of ourselves and the world around us. One area where language can have a significant impact is in the use of personal pronouns. While it may seem like a small thing, the use of personal pronouns can have a big impact on how individuals feel and how they are perceived by others.
For individuals who identify as transgender, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming, the use of correct personal pronouns is especially important. When someone is misgendered, meaning they are referred to by the wrong pronoun, it can be hurtful and invalidating. However, when individuals are referred to by the correct pronoun, it can be a powerful affirmation of their identity and create a more inclusive environment.
Using the correct pronouns is not only important for individuals who identify as transgender, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming, but for everyone. By respecting each other’s pronouns, we create a more welcoming and inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and accepted for who they are.
9Dot is proud to announce the recent addition of a pronoun feature in Workday that helps ensure that we are referring to each other in ways that feel authentic and accurate.
Additionally, we have started a pilot in several of our charter school client sites to add pronouns to Student Identification Cards in honor of Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31, 2023, a day to celebrate the beautiful diversity of the transgender community and show support for our friends and loved ones who are proudly living their truth.
Making the effort to use correct pronouns may take a bit of practice and adjustment, but it’s worth it to create a workplace where everyone feels comfortable and supported. It’s a simple language choice that can make a big impact on how people feel and how they are perceived.
By respecting each other’s pronouns, we can create a culture of respect and acceptance that benefits everyone.
